New computer setup

New computer setup & data transfer in Brisbane

The new computer is out of the box and running. The problem is that everything you actually care about is still on the old one.

Geek Alert sets up new computers across Brisbane and moves everything across — files, photos, email, contacts, bookmarks, printers. You get a machine that's ready to use, not a project for the weekend.

  • Everything moved across, not just files
  • The bundled junk removed
  • We don't sell hardware — so no upsell
What comes across

Everything, not just the documents folder

Copying files is the easy part. The bits people miss are the ones that hurt a fortnight later:

  • Documents, photos, music and downloads
  • Email, including contacts, folders and signatures
  • Browser bookmarks, saved passwords and open tabs
  • Printers and scanners, set up and tested
  • Software you actually use, reinstalled and signed in
  • Desktop layout and settings, so it still feels like yours
  • Your Microsoft or Apple account, set up properly the first time

The bundled junk, removed

New computers arrive full of trial software — antivirus that expires in 30 days and then nags, manufacturer utilities that duplicate what Windows already does, and games nobody asked for. It slows the machine down from day one.

We strip it out, turn on the security that's already built in, and set up the updates so the computer stays quick rather than gradually getting slower.

Advice on what to buy — before you buy it

We don't sell hardware, so there's nothing in it for us either way. A short conversation before you spend the money is usually the most valuable part of the job: what you actually need, what's genuinely worth paying more for, and what's marketing.

Plenty of people spend too much on the wrong thing and too little on the one part that would have made a difference.

Shown how it works

At your pace.

  • What's changed since your last one

  • No question is a silly one

And a proper handover

Before we leave, we'll walk you through what's different, make sure you can find everything, and check you know your own passwords — which is more often the sticking point than the computer itself. Our password guide covers making that easier.

This is also the right moment to set up a backup on the new machine, while it's clean and there's nothing to lose yet. We can do that in the same visit — see backup & recovery.

Why people book this rather than doing it themselves

It's an afternoon, not ten minutes

Migrations are mostly waiting, punctuated by the three things that don't work. We do those often enough to know where they are.

  • Patient & respectfulEspecially for non-technical users. We won't make you feel silly for asking.
  • Plain-English explanationsNo tech talk. You'll understand what went wrong and what we did about it.
  • No upsellingOnly what you actually need — and an honest answer when something isn't worth fixing.
  • Owner-operatedAccountability you can call by name. You deal directly with the person doing the work.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell computers?
No, and that's deliberate — it means our advice on what to buy isn't a sales pitch. Tell us what you use the computer for and roughly what you want to spend, and we'll tell you what's worth getting and what's a waste of money. You buy it wherever you like.
Can you transfer from a computer that won't turn on?
Usually yes. If the old machine is dead but its drive is intact, the data can normally be pulled off it directly. If the drive itself has failed, that's a different job — see data recovery.
How long does a new computer setup take?
Most are done within the hour. What stretches it is the amount of data — a decade of photos takes as long as it takes to copy — and how many accounts and passwords need sorting out along the way. We'll give you an estimate in the first 15 minutes.
Can you move me from Windows to a Mac, or the other way?
Yes. Files, photos and email move across fine. Software doesn't — anything you paid for on Windows generally needs its Mac version. We'll go through what you actually use before you switch, so there are no unpleasant surprises afterwards.
